Portland National Night Out features organizing and supporting community partnerships to prevent crime and fear of crime. This year SHNA events will include neighborhood block parties with a focus on crime prevention and community awareness. In past years, SHNA has met in Hoyt Arboretum on Taylor and many other streets throughout our boundaries. This year SHNA is supporting block parties all over the neighborhood. OUTDOOR MOVIE IN THE PARK & BACK-TO-SCHOOL DESSERT MIXER - Friday September 16th @ 6:30 PM Hoyt Arboretum Shell

SHNA, Friends of Hoyt Arboretum, Friends of Trees and students of the Sylvan Middle Schools cohost this late summer dessert mixer and movie under the trees in Hoyt Arboretum. You provide something to sit on, dessert to share and beverages for yourself. Friends of Trees volunteers will present several mini-tours of the groves near the Wedding Meadow. September in Portland will provide the scenery and weather. Freshly popped popcorn! Gather at 6:30. Movie at sundown.

STREET TREE PRUNING WORKSHOP - Saturday November 5th @ 9:30 AM

The southwest hills are lush with mature and beautiful trees. Learn healthy and fortifying tree pruning techniques from a professional arborist and Portland Parks and Recreation / Urban Forestry staff. Participants will have the opportunity to practice what they learn on parking lot trees at East Sylvan Middle School where we will meet. Bring gloves. Dress for weather. Tools and sharp objects will be used. Children must be supervised by their adult at all times. Hot beverages and snacks provided by Starbucks and Pizzicato. OREGON ZOOLIGHTS & HOLIDAY FOOD DRIVE - Thursday, December 8th @ 6:30 PM

Celebrate the season with your neighbors at a special FREE exhibition of the ZooLights and Cookie Exchange. Bring your favorite batch of homemade cookies to share and a packaged food item to donate to the Oregon Food Bank. Check in at the front gate and gather in the designated Zoo meeting room to drop off your donation and sample cookies. Zoo entrance is free for you and your guests who arrive with you. Local ID required.
